Stress and the Effects on the BodyStress is the response to both positive and/or negative demands, to whatever degree, on the body. Stressors can be any disturbance on the body, positive or negative, such as excess joy, excess grief, poor sleep, pain, extremes in environmental temperature, physical activity, emotional activity/response, daily living requirements thus energy usage, spiritual stress, etc. Although stress is necessary for normal daily functioning, it must be properly regulated keeping it within a healthy balance. As such all stressors must be taken into account when assessing and addressing an individuals stress levels. Stress response on the bodyThe stress response, referred specifically as the “fight or flight” response, is much like a reflexive response, thus an automatic, uncontrolled response for protective and adaptation purpose. It was intended for short periods of stress, not on going and repeated stressful events and is not able to differentiate between physical, emotional or spiritual stress. When any stressors occurs, nerve signals travel to various glands, tripping off a variety of responses in an effort of meeting the changing demands on the body, thus having further reaching affects than what one might at first imagine.
